Uzair Jaswal’s ‘Sajna’ is a retro musical treat

Singer Uzair Jaswal has given us quite a few memorable melodies and his latest offering ‘Sajna’ is no different. And it’s just not the music that deserves applaud but also the music video – a fun visual treat that time travels fans into the quirky ’80s era – helmed by none other than Uzair’s brother and emerging artist Yasir Jaswal.

Singer Uzair Jaswal has given us quite a few memorable melodies and his latest offering ‘Sajna’ is no different. The video starts off with ’80s-inspired prom music but that’s just clever deception. The song isn’t a rip-off of the Grease musical even if the video shows Uzair pulling off a Danny Zuko on us and one with enough swagger. It’s hip, peppy, Punjabi and quite original. Those who don’t belong the early Gen Ys will have a tough time relating to the video, but those who have grown moon-walking on Jackson’s ‘Thriller’ and idolized Pink Floyd wouldn’t help falling in love with Uzair’s unconventional attempt.

The upbeat piano riffs are well-complemented by the drums and Uzair’s vocal prowess shines through with his command over the varying pitch. Released online on Thursday, the song has so far received mixed reviews but one cannot ignore the fact that in an industry that is literally surviving on ventilator, such attempts are always welcome. We recommend you give it a listen and decide for yourself. Our verdict: brilliant.

Imran Abbas launches Jaanisaar soundtrack with team

The promotions for Imran Abbas’ upcoming film Jaanisaar alongside Pernia Qureshi are in full swing. The actor was in Mumbai, this Thursday, to launch the music of his film in what was a star-studded sangeet event including a classical dance performance by the stylist-turned-actress Pernia.

Imran cut a dapper figue in a grey suit and stubble while Pernia looked every bit the royal empress in a traditional lehenga. Directed by Muzaffar Ali of Umrao Jaan fame, the film’s Pakistani connection extends beyond just Imran. The soundtrack includes songs from Pakistani Sufi doyenne Abida Parveen and singer Shafqat Amanat Ali, who has also co-composed the music for the film and had flown to India to give a performance at the launch event.

Shafqat’s efforts did not go unnoticed as the producer thanked him for his wonderful contribution. “Jaanisaar is not a regular Bollywood film. And since it’s set in the pre-Independence era, the music has to be different and soulful. I have been very fortunate to have Shafqat and Muzaffar Ali who came up with soulful compositions,” said producer Mira Ali. The film set in pre-independence era is scheduled for an August 21 release.

Jeffrey Dean Morgan joins The Good Wife

Years after stealing hearts as Denny Duquette in Grey’s Anatomy, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, 49, is back in the television spotlight. At the peak of his career, Jeffrey Dean is an in-demand actor these days, and has four prolific television projects to his credit in 2015.

He starred in History’s miniseries, Texas Rising with an all-star cast. He’s also starring in CBS’ Extant with Halle Berry and played Joe DiMaggio in The Secret Life of Marilyn Monroe for Lifetime.

The big news, however, is his decision to join the cast of The Good Wife as a series regular. Jeffrey will play the role of an investigator on the show and could also be a love interest for attorney Alicia Florrick, played by Julianna Margulies. Apparently, Jeffrey was on the fence about joining the show until Julianna Margulies, who also serves as producer for the show, intervened and “closed the deal”.

“I’ve known her [Julianna] for probably 10 years. I’m excited to go to work with her,” said the actor in an interview to TVLine. “When the offer had come in I was in the middle of working [on Extant] and I had to think about it. To go from one show to another without a break was a little daunting. And I got a great e-mail from Julianna and that’s what closed the deal for me. I just wrote her back and said, ‘I’m in’.”
