Taylor Swift and Ed Sheeran lead MTV VMA nominations

The nomination list for MTV Video Music Awards is out, and once again, it is America’s sweetheart, Taylor Swift who is leading the pack, with nine nods. Taylor’s track, ‘Bad Blood’ with Kendrick Lamar is one of the year’s biggest hits and, in all likelihood, will win the Video of the Year nod.

The bigger surprise is the nomination for Hozier’s music video, ‘Take Me To Church’ in the Best Rock Video Category. Brendan Canty, who co-directed the music video with Conal Thompson, expressed his surprise in a recent interview and said, “I was sitting in my room when I got an email from Shemazing magazine, asking can they interview me about our two MTV VMA nominations. I was like... VMA nominations?! The first thing I did was check was it true, and then

I rang Conal.”The award ceremony, set for August 30, will see the return of twerking queen Miley Cyrus but this time, Miley will host the ceremony. This fact has not gone down too well with the Parents Television Council, who released a statement on Tuesday, condemning MTV’s choice of host.

“MTV’s choice of Miley Cyrus as host for its annual Video Music Awards show makes clear the network’s intentions as to what kind of program it intends to air. If MTV cannot guarantee that the program will be suitable for children, then the network must — must — rate the show TV-MA. Assigning any lower age-rating constitutes an express message to parents, and to corporate sponsors, that the program will be free of explicit material,” read the PTC statement.
