This refers to the editorial, ‘Smooth sailing’ (November 21). The smooth running of the election process during the second phase of the local bodies elections is a positive development in our electoral culture. It indicates political maturity of voters as well as those running the election.
As for a change in the traditional pattern of electoral preferences, opposition parties still have a lot to learn. Merely criticising the sitting government is not enough to win electoral support of the masses. Those who are challenging the government ought to come up with a better record of performance, or at least with a programme of solid, practicable improvements in governance. Rhetoric alone is no longer enough to win people over.
