Fawad, Umar give NBP lead over Karachi Whites

KARACHI: Fawad Alam and Umar Waheed blasted fine centuries to put National Bank of Pakistan (NBP) in a strong position against Karachi Whites on the second day of their four-day third round Group B game of Quaid-e-Azam Trophy here at National Stadium on Tuesday.
Fawad hit unbeaten 127, while Waheed slammed 115 not out as NBP reached 251-2 in their first innings at stumps in response to Karachi Whites’ 227 all out. They have 24 runs lead with eight wickets in hand.
Left-handed Fawad, who failed to find a place in the playing XI in Pakistan’s three Tests against England in the UAE, struck 21 fours in his unfinished 181-ball feat.
Young Lahore-born Waheed smashed 16 fours in his 183-ball knock. After NBP lost openers Mohammad Nawaz (8) and Nasir Jamshed (0) early, Fawad and Waheed revived the innings, adding 239 for the third wicket unbroken partnership.
Earlier, stand-in skipper Mohammad Hasan, who was batting on 21, struck fine 73 with nine fours to enable Karachi Whites to add 61 more runs to their innings which they resumed at 166-7.
Left-arm medium pacer Zia-ul-Haq ended the innings with impressive figures of 6-40.
At LCCA Ground in Lahore, Anas Mehmood (70) and skipper Usman Salahuddin (59) shared 122 for the third wicket to guide Lahore Whites to 324-6 after resuming their first innings at 104-1 against WAPDA.
Anas hit nine fours and a six from 150 deliveries. Usman clobbered six fours from 130 balls.
Left-handed Test opener Sami Aslam (46) added only six runs to his overnight score before being dismissed.
Mohammad Waheed (40*) and Asfand Mehran (24*) were at the crease.
Pacer Mohammad Irfan got 3-59. Left-arm Test pacer Junaid Khan captured 2-82.
Junaid did not play in the Test series against England despite being part of the touring squad.
At Pindi Stadium in Rawalpindi, promising all-rounder Ammad Butt produced his career-best figures of 5-34 with pace bowling to enable Habib Bank Limited (HBL) to dismiss

Rawalpindi for 183 after they began their first innings at 49-2.
Naved Yasin, who was at the crease on 18, went on to score 76, including 12 fours and two sixes.
After losing two quick wickets, Naved added 111 for the third wicket with Babar Naeem, who made 50 not out which included nine fours.
HBL were struggling at 36-3, in response. Skipper Imran Farhat was batting on 15.
At Jinnah Stadium, Sialkot, FATA were in deep trouble at 51-6 in their second innings against Khan Research Laboratories (KRL) after claiming a 61-run lead.
Pacer Mohammad Abbas took 4-29.
FATA, earlier, began their first innings at 106-5 and perished for 168. Haroon Sadaqat hit 37 with five fours.
Nouman Ali (4-27) and Mohammad Abbas (4-62) bowled well.
KRL, in response, were bowled out for 107. Skipper Saeed Anwar Junior scored 34 with seven fours.
Mohammad Zeeshan picked 5-58.
In a Group B match at Diamond Club Ground, Islamabad, Abid Ali struck superb 136 with 22 fours to enable Islamabad to reach 270-6 in their first innings after resuming at 123-3 against Port Qasim Authority (PQA). Only 38.2 overs were bowled due to wet conditions. On the first day 35 overs had been bowled.
Abid added 166 for the fourth wicket with Shahid Yousuf who hammered 70 with 11 fours. Left-arm pacer Zohaib Shera got 3-105.
Not a single ball was bowled due to rain in the match between Peshawar and Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC) at Arbab Niaz Stadium, Peshawar.
Peshawar had scored 217-6 in their first innings on Monday.
At Niaz Stadium, Hyderabad, Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited (SNGPL) were on the verge of gaining lead as after scoring 331 in their first innings they reduced Hyderabad to 254-9. Shoaib Leghari (78), Kashif Bhatti (58) and Faisal Athar (55) hit fine fifties for the hosts.
Leghari and Kashif shared 111 for the seventh wicket stand.
International pacer Asad Ali got 3-28. Bilawal Bhatti, Hussain Talat and Imran Khalid clinched two wickets each.
At Gaddafi Stadium, Lahore, Saeed Bin Nasir (128) and Umair Khan (100) enabled United Bank Limited (UBL) to declare their first innings at 432-5 after resuming at 176-2 against Lahore Blues.
The duo shared 129 for the third wicket. Saeed hit 18 boundaries and Umair cracked 11 fours. Mohammad Saeed and Agha Salman claimed two wickets each.
Lahore Blues, in response, were reeling at 36-7. International pacer Ehsan Adil got 3-21. Left-arm pacer Rumman Raees picked 2-6.
