The recent targeted operation conducted by the Rangers has come as relief for the people of Karachi. The law and order situation has improved considerably. However, street crime in the city, though not at the pre-Rangers operation level, can still be regarded as high. We hear of people being mugged daily. Mobile phone snatching is particularly common. Therefore, there is a good reason for people to be worried about the safety of their valuables when out on the streets.
Street crime in big cities like Karachi is caused by a combination of various factors such as poverty, degraded urban environments, lack of social support and gang activity, as well as anger, fear or mistrust and nexus with criminal mafias. Unemployment is one of the main causes. The government therefore should focus on a combination of measures that target unemployment and the economic conditions in deprived areas followed by a robust security plan to control street crime.
