In today’s edition of Us, the cover story ‘The not-so-curious case of trans oppression in Pakistan’ by Saniyyah Eman made me proud of the fact that young writers are taking the plight of the trans people seriously, and trying to eradicate the unfair biases so prevalent in our society against them. I was surprised when I saw the title page, and borrowed the magazine from my 16-year-old daughter to peruse the story. The writer underscored the problems being faced by this persecuted group in a sensitive manner and I wish that our people in general change their perspective about them. It was good thinking to print the story in a youth magazine because as future movers and shakers, they need to get rid of so many wrong notions that people have.

Hey Ed,

The article ‘Chopping down DNA’ by Saliha Hussain published on 4th September was quite fascinating as it depicts a very different perspective of how we see certain scientific phenomena. It was really a pleasure to see how someone has elaborated the perplexing concept of DNA with such simplicity that all the entangled strings were detangled. This article is a true depiction of in depth understanding of life and inquisitive nature of writer about life. I wish to see more articles like this which help us to think out of the box and indulge in solving the mysteries of this universe

Hi Ed,

I was very happy to read in today’s Us (18 September) the interview of Maha Hasan. She is young, vibrant and an amazing actress. Her answers were very sensible and interesting, and showed that she is well-educated. Thank you, Tooba Ghani for this very insightful interview.

In Poets’ Corner, the poem ‘Subtle wounds’ by Laraib Zakir caught my attention. Good job, Laraib! Hope to see more of your poems in Us.

Reflection

Narrated Abu Said Al-Khudri (R.A):

The Prophet (S.A.W) said, ‘Beware! Avoid sitting on the roads.” They (the people) said, “O Allah s Apostle! We can’t help sitting (on the roads) as these are (our places) here we have talks.” The Prophet said, ‘l f you refuse but to sit, then pay the road its right’ They said, “What is the right of the road, O Allah’s Apostle?” He said, ‘Lowering your gaze, refraining from harming others, returning greeting, and enjoining what is good, and forbidding what is evil.”
