KARACHI: It turned out to be a battle for supremacy between the top three amateurs of Defence Authority Country and Golf Club (DACGC) as the Sindh Golf Association (SGA) Cup teed off here on Saturday.
Making full use of familiar ‘home’ conditions, the trio of Zohaib Asif, Waseem Rana and Karrar Hussain finished at the top of the leader-board at the end of Round One of the two-day championship.
Zohaib stole the limelight with a stunning eagle on the par-5 eighth – regarded by many a golfer as one of the toughest holes on the DACGC course. He made birdies on the tough par-4 fourth, sixth and 18th holes to finish with a par round of 72. He also had a double bogey on the par-4 tenth and three bogeys.
Tied with Zohaib on the first place was defending champion Waseem Rana, who also finished with 72.
Placed on the third spot was Karrar Hussain. Three shots off the pace was international Ahmed Ali Shah of Quetta Golf Club.
In the seniors’ category Col Syed Naeem Azhar and Brig Ayaz Peer finished at the top of the leader-board with a identical scores of 79. They were followed by Sohail K. Rana (81), Pervez Ansari (84), Sajid Sharif (85) and Arshad I. A Khan (85).
Aanir Farooq won the ladies title by three shots after returning with a card of 80 in the 18-hole contest. DACGC’s Humera Khalid finished as the runner-up with a score of 83. She was followed by Naghmana Atif (85).
Vivek Anand won the title in the juniors’ Under-18 category in which just five players took part. Junaid Irfan was the runner-up with a score of 85.
Sabih Khan carded 86 to win the juniors’ Under-16 contest ahead of Syed Ali Arif (89).
The prize distribution ceremony of the SGA Cup will take place on Sunday (today) with Administrator DHA, Brigadier Zubair Ahmed, being the chief guest.
