The month of October occupies a unique place in our history – albeit for all bad happenings. It was on October 27, 1947 when Indian troops landed in Kashmir as the Maharaja declared the accession of state to India. It is the month that took away one of our best leaders. Liaquat Ali Khan was shot dead in Rawalpindi on October 17, 1951.
The first martial law was imposed by General Ayub Khan on October 8, 1958. That was the first blow to democracy. Another blow was given on October 12, 1999 when the Nawaz government was toppled by Gen Pervez Musharraf. The devastating earthquake hit Kashmir on October 8, 2005.
