LAHORE: Amid severe shortage of petrol, the district administration in the Punjab capital on Tuesday prohibited sale of petrol in containers and bottles to reduce gap between demand and supply.

The DCO Lahore has imposed section 144 on the open sale of the fuel till next order. The consumers would only be allowed to fill tanks of their vehicles after the decision.

Petroleum Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi had to extend an apology to the masses on Monday as Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif expressed anger at officials from the ministry, stating those responsible would not be spared.

In Punjab, long queues are seen at the few petrol stations. There have been several complaints of petrol being sold at inflated prices as his as Rs400 per litre in the province.

The acute fuel shortage in Punjab has caused hardships to domestic and industrial consumers with households unable to make school-runs and industries unable to function.
