The Skill Development Council has recently announced a six-week crash programme in designing the microprocessor chip. It is a high-tech job and a good step towards capacity development of our engineers and diploma-holders in electronics. This is just one course offered by the council. There must be many other courses too that can enhance the skills of our people. Such courses should be offered free-of-charge to those who need them, or else a nominal amount should be charged from those attending the courses.
Why can we not establish a Silicon Valley of our own? It should be home to high-tech corporations and start-up companies. We can house innovators and manufacturers of high-tech equipment in that area. India has established such a place in Bangalore which is a hub for firms specialising in R&D, electronics and software production. It is time to make Pakistan a high-tech country.
