Earlier this month, Bollywood’s A-list star Deepika Padukone was spotted at the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) in Delhi to express solidarity with the students who were attacked, just a few days before the release of her latest film Chhapaak. Though the Meghna Gulzar directorial, which is a biopic based on real-life acid-attack survivor Laxmi Agarwal, has witnessed a drop of 80 per cent in its second week, the actress is skyrocketing globally.

Deepika has recently collaborated with Louis Vuitton for their pre-fall 2020 campaign. This makes her the first Bollywood actor to feature in the luxury retail company’s global campaign. Padukone joins the list of high-profile stars including Alicia Vikander, Sophie Turner, Lea Seydoux and Chloe Grace Moretz among others.

“Nicolas Ghesquiere, creative director women’s collections, who is known to have a keen eye for casting unique faces to represent the storied French luxury house, handpicked the Bollywood star to be one of the 24 poster girls and boys to star in Louis Vuitton’s renditions of pulp horror movies and books,” reported Vogue.

Featuring in ‘Don’t Turn Around‘, a fiction thriller by Michelle Gagnon, Deepika Padukone is dressed in a checkered black and white dress, grey overcoat, mini belt bag and a pair of green quilted boots, and according to Vogue, she “exudes an air of sinister mystery in the re-imagined promotional still under Ghesquiere’s fashion-first banner”. Here’s to Deepika Padukone rising sky-high; she is the first major actor to speak on mental illness on national TV and the first actor to show up in the student protests ahead of the Modi Sarkar passing the anti-Muslim bill – while her predecessors are quiet on the matter. Point, Deepika Padukone.
