Prayer leader, woman gunned down in rickshaw

A man and a woman were gunned down by unidentified assailants in Landhi on Wednesday. According to the Quaidabad police, Maulana Ubaidur Rehman and Zahida were shot dead on a main road near Younus Chowrangi. They were commuting in a rickshaw.

Muhammad Nawaz, sub divisional police officer (SDPO) of the Quaidabad Division, said as they were informed about the attack, a police team rushed to the crime scene and moved the victims to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC). However, he said, doctors pronounced the victims dead on arrival.

During an investigation it was found that Rehman was in imam at a mosque in a private factory situated in Landhi. The man was resident of the same area while the woman hailed from Thatta District, said SDPO Nawaz. He said two attackers shot at the victims when they were travelling in a rickshaw. The assailants used a 30 bore pistol whose two bullet shells had been seized from the crime scene, he said, adding that they had been sent to a forensic division for an examination.

So far, the police have no clue about the relationship between the man and the woman. SDPO Nawaz said families of the both victims had taken bodies for burial but they had not given any statement to the police. He said the police had initiated an investigation to catch the killers and ascertain the cause of the attack.
