The Punjab government has decided to build a new kidney and liver transplant institute at the cost of Rs12 billion at Bedian Road in Lahore and allotted 50 acres of land for the purpose. Is there a need to start new projects when conditions at existing healthcare facilities are going from bad to worse? The existing facilities can be upgraded with the fraction of the cost allocated for the new project.
There is already a state-of-the-art liver transplant centre at the Sheikh Zaid Hospital in Lahore that is in need of funds. The Punjab chief minister should take notice of this situation.
