Unfortunately Pakistan is no stranger to the illegal trade of human organs. According to some media reports, the FIA has identified a gang in Lahore involved in the illegal organ trade. Organ trafficking, like other forms of organized crime, feeds off communal inequities, exploiting the desperation of the poor and vulnerable. A few doctors were also part of the gang identified by the FIA, demonstrating the key role that medical professionals play in facilitating the lucrative trade, where each organ can net millions.
A large number of complaints have been registered against this crime, however, victims of organ trafficking are still awaiting justice. Kidnapping an individual to forcefully remove their kidneys and other organs has now become all too common. The law-enforcement agencies should take serious notice of the situation. Those involved in this cruel act should be given strict punishments. Tackling the issue should be among the top most priorities of the government.
