This refers to the article ‘Judicial challenges’ (Dec 27) by Dr Ikramul Haq. It would not be cynical to say that both the bench and the bar are not serious in carrying out judicial reforms, as they think it would erode their authority. The lawyers’ rampage on PIC Lahore was a test case but those involved in the act of vandalism are being granted bail.
People have been waiting for justice in frozen cases or those proceeding at a snail’s pace – the Baldia Town factory fire in which 260 innocent workers were burnt alive, Model Town incident in which 14 persons died, the dreaded fugitive Rao Anwar, first released on bail and now resting at home, the case of Uzair Baloch, and the recurring child abuse incidents that do not seem to cease. Strangely, the COAS extension issue was considered more important than the aforementioned cases, despite their obvious relevance to the public.
