A farce

Strange and unusual things are happening in the country. A convicted former PM, undergoing jail sentence, received extraordinary relief in being allowed to go abroad. The imprisoned PPP co-chairman, facing corruption charges, granted bail followed with a relief to the speaker of the Sindh Assembly. On the other hand, the judgment given by a special court trying ex-president Musharraf for treachery raises serious questions of fairness. Nowhere in the world is imposition of emergency equated with an act of treason. The COAS extension saga too was unwarranted and should have been avoided. All it has done is politicize and sensationalise a non-issue.

The state has become ungovernable, unable to treat everyone equal before the law and may collapse under the weight of ubiquitous incompetence and greed. There is

no solution to the nation’s existential challenge under a farcical democratic dispensation in place.
