Last year hairstyles like shag cuts and lobs took over by storm, but this year is all about vintage inspiration, twisted buns and messy up-dos. Admit it or not but nothing complements a person’s overall appearance more than lustrous hair that is well taken care of and styled in the hottest fashion. A trendy hairstyle can jazz up your whole persona and give you that oomph. This season some of the hair trends are bold, experimental and some are even super subtle.

Here are five hairstyles that are trending this season.

The pretzel

These twisted buns were seen a lot in the ’90s and it was supermodel Kate Moss’s go-to-look for back in the day. The pretzel hair style is really elegant and a twist on the regular low chignon. The pretzel bun hairstyle builds on the easy, chic wearability of a side bun with the help of some clever hair twists. It is so easy especially if hair is naturally straight or slightly wavy. Turn your head upside down and gather hair into a really high ponytail, pulling it towards the side you want the bun to sit on. For taming those flyaways, apply hair spray as you go, then secure it with a band. Twist the pony tightly around the base, pin in place and finish with one more blast of hair spray. Voila you are done!

The slick down

If chignons, messy updos and French twists make you shiver – then you are the kind that should try something a little edgier, like the slicked-back style. Slicked back hair is one of the biggest trends that we are witnessing this season. You will require a lot of gel and hair spray if you want to pull off this hairstyle. Apply the gel and comb, pulling hair away from your face and tucking the sides behind your ears to create the slick effect. Spritz strong hold hairspray over the roots. If you want a wet look finish, you can also add a touch of shine spray.

Sky-high bouffant

This ultra-teased, messy updo will add some drama to your hairstyle. The key is height. Start by using a lot of texturizing spray and then backcomb. Be methodical and don’t stop until hair is sticking out in all directions. Next, take the top front section and clip out of the way. Smooth hair back behind your ears on either side and secure with hairgrips. Finally, go back to the top section, backcomb some more and shape into a messy, high quiff, using more grips to hold. Finish with a generous blast of strong hold hair spray.

Braided buns

Buns are a great way to pull your hair out of your face. Going for a simple bun can be boring, so incorporate a braid and add a bit of flair to your hair. One of the most popular styles is French braids joined into a braided bun. If you can do a basic French braid, you can achieve this easy braided updo – all you have to do is just curl your braid into a chignon on one side of your head, and pin in place.

Coiffed crown

This hairstyle has some major ’80s vibes going on and the main focus is at the top. The best part is that it can work on almost any hair length. Take a large, triangular section, from the temples to the back of your head. Then backcomb to make it easier to mould into shape. Smooth the front section with a mixed bristle brush, and then push your hair forward to create the quiff, letting it collapse over to one side. Secure the tail in place with hairgrips and keep the sides tucked behind your ears to emphasize the height.
