The concept of nail colour dates back to ancient times when women realized nails can be more than just body parts; they could be used as a form of body accessories too. Eventually, mere nail colours lead to nail art becoming a phenomenon. In fact, it was in the 1930s when the earliest forms of nail art were noticed, when fashion became a significant part of women’s lives and magazines informed women on the right nail colour for different times of day and outfits. It was then when nail art became popular in Europe and women got sceneries painted on their tiny nail canvases.

Today, we can see how nail art has transformed to the next level of cosmetic significance and has become an interesting means of self-expression for women. From neon colours to nail gems, from metallic finishes to 3D nail ornaments, nail art has now become a fun way to give a new look to your nails on a regular basis. Are you also looking for quick and quirky ways to wow your friends with nails that help you accessorise? Here are some funky nail designs you can do in less than ten minutes!

This simple yet elegant look that Alia Bhatt went for takes no more than five minutes. If you’re looking for a quick nail art fix before going out, this is the best design to go for. All you need is a shade of gold nail colour and either a black nail art pen or any black nail varnish. Alia has used Maybelline Color Show’s Bold Gold. Apply a coat of gold and wait for it dry. Then use your black nail art pen to make straight horizontal lines across your nails, or if you are using black nail varnish use a thin paint brush. If you’re a nail art buff you can also purchase nail art striping tools which are available in the market or you can easily buy them online. The number of stripes depends on your nail length but three per nail look decent, you don’t want to go overboard and look creepy with too many stripes on your nails! When you’re done don’t forget to apply a top coat to give you nails a more finished look.

Who rocks nail art better than Lady Gaga? Her bold and funky nail art designs have been catching the attention of nail art enthusiasts world over. Since nail gems are all the rage these days, this is a great look to go for to wow your friends and it has a seemingly steam-punk theme which looks super cool. In this particular version, Lady Gaga went for the velvet-nails look which is quite popular these days. You can try this look by using flocking powder, just apply a transparent base coat and dip your nail in powder while it is still wet. If you prefer something simpler, you can go for a dark shade of green nail colour. We recommend ‘Going Incognito’ by Essie. You will also need red and pink nail gems (the size depends on your nail length) and nail art metal circles! These are essential to achieve this look. It’s your choice how you place the gems and circles around your nails, the best part about nail art is experimentation. Normally a topcoat is enough to hold the nail gems in place, but if that does not work then you might need some nail glue.

Here’s a funky style of nail art by Zooey Deschanel. She is known for her unique nail art designs and this one is super fun and quick to carry out. Geometric shapes in nail art are quite famous these days and for this look you just need white and black nail varnish and a square nail art brush. If you can’t find a set of nail art brushes, I’m sure you can find a thin paintbrush in your little sister’s art box. Apply a coat of plain white nail polish, wait for it to dry and use the brush and black nail colour to make two squares opposite each other. Do this on all the nails and wait for the squares to dry. Then use a nail dotting tool, or a toothpick to make dots on all the squares, two dots per nail. If you want to go for a glossier look instead of going for plain white you can try L’Oreal Color Riche Pearl White for an elegant shine.

Sometimes it’s really fun to go for a completely quirky design on your nails, which make you stand out. This ‘emoticon’ look by Rihanna looks humorous and is also very simple to do. For this you need the perfect shade of yellow nail polish. It is essential to go for the right shade of yellow because emoticons are associated with a specific yellow and you don’t want your nails to look tacky due to a bad pigment. We recommend a coat of ‘I Just Can’t Cope-acabana’ by OPI. Then just grab a black nail art pen or nail polish with a brush and draw on your favourite smileys. Rihanna decided to go for all happy smileys with one sad smiley on each middle finger. You can make it funkier by experimenting with winkeys too!
