KARACHI: Pakistan’s tennis player Samir Iftikhar, who just completed his eligibility for men’s tennis at The University of New Mexico, was named the Mountain West Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
The Mountain West Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award is the single highest honour bestowed by the league.
Salim Saifullah Khan, the Pakistan Tennis Federation president, congratulated Samir on achieving unprecedented accomplishments.
Paying rich tributes to the winning member of Pakistan Davis Cup team that played against Indonesia, the President said, “Samir made Pakistan and all of us proud not only by achieving distinction at his US University where he studied and played but also by winning a crucial Davis Cup match against Indonesia. We wish him great successes in his professional career”.
He was joined in the league’s announcement by former Air Force cross country and track and field runner Rebecca Esselstein.
Iftikhar is the fourth male New Mexico student-athlete to win the Scholar-Athlete of the Year award, and sixth Lobo overall.
