After a decade of making instrumental music that merges ethnic instruments like the rubab and the sehtar with percussive instruments and modern guitars, Khumariyaan is finally entering national consciousness.

Having appeared on Coke Studio 11 last year on a collaborative song as well as a solo one called ‘Ya Qurbaan’ for which they won a Lux Style Award for Song of the Year (2019), the band has appeared in a new music video called ‘Dard Ruuktaa Nahin’. The music video features the quartet, standing on a beach, surrounded by colored flags and dancers and as the evening falls, lights on a bulb accompany them. By the end of it, the making of the song, is also shown, the cinematography and soon enough a bonfire takes its place. The video does go over the top, as such collaborations tend to go but this isn’t the worst one we’ve seen. The song is presented by MB Records, in association with Mont Blanc Entertainment. Such moves are made by bands to earn moolah and an act like Khumariyaan, with plans to unveil a debut album soon, certainly need it.

Speaking to Instep about it, Sparlay Rawail described it as a promotional track Khumariyaan did for which they got a handsome sum and a good shoot. They’ve just uploaded it on their own channel. “There is a company called Mont Blanc Entertainment and they made a drama called Dard Ruuktaa Nahin and this was the promotional track for it.”

As for the single, ‘Sakal’ which is set to accompany the release of their debut record, Sparlay Rawail told Instep, “‘Sakal’ is going through story-boarding, reference images for the narrative and stuff like that. The album is ready. With the release of ‘Sakal’, we will also release it. I’m just being a little nitpicky and a little lazy. But we’re not far from the shoot and since we are bankrolling it ourselves, as and when the concerts come, we will save money and give the shoot a go-ahead.”
