According to Saeeda Mandviwalla, CEO & Creative Artistic Director TONI&GUY and Essensuals Hairdressing, there are many factors that impact the needs of your hair on any given day, such as the temperature outside, humidity, hard water, the hair products you use and much more.

Even if your hair feels thoroughly hydrated and moisturised this week, it might become lifeless and extremely dry the next week. You’ll need to be willing and able to adapt to the unique needs of your hair. This week, Saeeda shares with You! tips on how to maintain beautiful and manageable hair.

You! What is a healthy hair regime for women and what kind of hair products should be used daily?

Saeeda Mandviwalla: For a good hair regime you need a shampoo free of parabens, sodium chloride and sulphates. Use a conditioner suited to your hair type. Apply hair masks or get a salon treatment at least once a week. Moreover, use a serum or light weight oil depending on the hair type for anti-frizz.

You! What colours are currently in and what shade is best suited to our skin colour?

SM: As experts, we advise according to your skin tone. Currently, colours sported by celebrities for 2019, with different skin tones are as follows: Rose Gold by Iskra Lawrence; Monotone Black by Rummer Willis; Sunrise Red by Kate Bosworth; Tropical Brown by Emma Roberts; Faded pastels by Kloe Kardashian and Lady Gaga; Living Coral by Katherine Langford; Dirty browns by Mehgan Markle and Anne Hathaway; Shadow Roots by Priyanka Chopra; Sundrenched blondes by Lucy Lu.

You! Give us some style ideas for hairdos that look smart and are easy too?

SM: If you woke up very late with absolutely zero time to even run a comb through your hair, try one of these quick and chic hairstyles. All these styles can be done en route, whether in the car or even walking to work. Ponytails with twist or a half hair up with a statement clip, or a top knot or braid, or chignon with flyaway like in the pictures are fast and easy everyday styles.

You! What colours are best suited for particular age groups like 20s, 30s, 40s etc?

SM: Age brackets are not really relevant to hair colour - persona and confidence is what really counts. However, I would say that you can go for bolder and more vibrant hair colours when you are in your 30s and 40s and slightly muted in your 50s.

You! Can you suggest haircuts for the following faces: round, oval and heart shaped?

SM: Whether your face is a rectangular, oval, square, round, heart or diamond shaped, the right cut will expertly frame and balance it while showcasing your best features for a flattering and complementary appearance.

Rectangular face: A soft layered cut, for example, can enhance cheekbones while disguising the corners of the face. However, you should be careful to avoid overly long styles, which can further elongate your appearance. If you do opt for a long length, try styling your hair with a blowout, waves or curls which will add horizontal volume and soften the sharp angles of your face.

Oval face: Consider yourself lucky. Thanks to their well-balanced appearance, oval faces can suit a wide variety of hairstyles. However, if you’re looking for a style with impact, you should consider opting for either long locks or a cute, short crop. For oval-faced ladies who like short hair, a blunt bob with subtle layers will look particularly chic.

Square-shaped face: This features a broad forehead, wide cheekbones and a strong jawline. So, if you have a square face, selecting a cut that softens these features is essential for a flattering appearance. For a look that complements your bone structure, consider a side parted style, which will offset the squareness. Long and airy layers can also be flattering and will help to disguise the sharp angles of your face.

Heart-shaped face: Your bone structure will feature a broad forehead and cheekbones with a narrow jawline and chin. As such, you should aim to balance your face shape with a cut that decreases your brow width and increases the width of the lower half of your face. For example, a long side-swept cut will disguise part of your forehead while drawing eyes down to the bottom of your face.

You! How often should we ideally get a cut and why?

SM: This depends a lot on hair length, goals and chemical processes. Long hair is very old. Like anything that age, the older your hair gets the more fragile it is. Long hair is typically more susceptible to breakage, split ends and to appearing thinner. If you colour or highlight your long hair, it is even more likely to be damaged. Regular haircuts help keep your hair strong and healthy. Long hair should be trimmed at least every eight to 12 weeks.

Short hair, especially if you want to keep your short style, needs to be cut more frequently to stay fresh. If you have short hair, you already know that it appears to grow out quickly. Short hair should be trimmed every four to eight weeks to keep the shape of your haircut looking good. If you colour, highlight, perm or chemically straighten your hair on a regular basis, you might notice that your hair needs trimming more frequently. Chemical processes can cause hair to break, split or become dry. More frequent haircuts can help prevent over-drying and breakage.

You! Suggest some cuts that are best suited to women who are always on the go - manageable yet trendy.

SM: Wash-and-wear hairstyles are always in fashion for women with busy lifestyles. Choosing a style should be determined by your hair type and texture, although some styles are easy to achieve in minimal time with the right haircut and styling products. Most are ready to go with a shampoo, quick blow dry and some finger styling. To find the perfect wash-and-wear style, evaluate your facial shape and hair type before making a style choice.

The pixie can be adapted to any hair type and is extremely versatile. It goes from high fashion with texture to smooth and sleek, or elegant when swept to the side with some waves. All of these can be achieved with your blow dryer and some styling mousse, volume mousse or moulding clay.

For the most flexibility, ask your stylist for a layered cut that’s short on the sides and back, and cropped around the ears. Keep the top a bit longer but blended into the lower layers, and feather the bangs. This will allow you to achieve several different styles depending on your time, choice and the occasion.

You! How are curly, messy hair and flyaways tamed?

SM: Curly hair can often be hard to handle. Having the right products help tame the curls and keep the definition. Label.m new curl define range does just that with a curl define foam or cream and a souffle and balm. These are all styling products that will keep your curls moisturised and healthy looking. Flyaway hair can be cared for as well. We have an antifrizz range especially created for frizzy hair as well.

You! What are the current hair trends both on the national and international circuit?

SM: Blunt bobs that are inspired by the ‘70s revival and popular celebrities like Kendall Jenner and Karlie Kloss. A new shorter length is set to be the standout hairstyle for 2019 internationally. Locally, it’s similar except keeping the length a little mid-length like a lob or a textured bob are trending.

You! What is the latest in hair for both men and women at TONI&GUY?

SM: Our legacy collection of cuts and colour for 2019 is on trend at the moment. This includes our bespoke looks for 2019. There are two men’s collections, which are textured crop and a layered cut for men. For women, there are two mid length cuts with disconnected layers, two longer haircuts with long and heavy layers and two shorter haircuts that are blunt and asymmetrical.
