Hey Ed,

‘Quiz Whiz’ on Shakespeare was a real treat! I am afraid I got a lot of answers wrong because I read the plays years ago, and did not remember a lot of stuff. I am planning to revisit Shakespeare, and for that I have Us to thank; the quiz rekindled my interest in Shakespeare. Keep up the good work!

Attention Lala Rukh!

Dear Ms. Lala Rukh,

Assalam alaikum,

Beti, I am a senior citizen, who still reads Us magazine, with teenage enthusiasm. In today’s issue (April 26) I read your piece, titled ‘Straight from the heart’.

I was both moved and inspired by your trials and tribulations. That by your resoluteness of Struggle you overcame all impediments is commendable.

I liked your resolve, where you wrote: At that time, I prayed to Allah, “I will never ask anyone to help me in finding a job, but I seek help from You only.” You have now realised the futility of seeking human help instead of Divine Help; do not ever pledge your future to a human, instead cling to the rope of Allah SWT....the tragedy is we recite Surah Fateha, numerous times in our Salat, but because we don’t understand or try to understand the meaning of our recitation, we fail to realise, that one verse out of the seven verses of The Opening Surah is, “...Thee do we serve and Thee do we beseech for help”. We must ask for His Guidance and Help only. You, MashAllah, have proven it to yourself.

I am glad that you shared your story and I am equally happy that Us magazine carried it. InshaAllah, your story will benefit a great number of young girls, boys, men and women.

With dua, Beti, for greater successes in life. Ameen

First timers’ corner

Hi Ed,

This is my first letter to Us, although I have been reading the magazine regularly for a while. I enjoy stories and articles, but Poets’ Corner’ make my Fridays, and I would like to praise all the poets who feature in this section. While I have read praise for writers – no doubt well deserved – I don’t think I have ever read a letter acknowledging the great work our talented young poets are doing. Thanks, guys, for regaling us week after week with beautiful poetry.

Reflection

Narrated by Sahl

The Prophet said, “There is a gate in Paradise called Ar-Raiyan, and those who observe fasts will enter through it on the Day of Resurrection and none except them will enter through it. It will be said, ‘Where are those who used to observe fasts?’ They will get up, and none except them will enter through it. After their entry the gate will be closed and nobody will enter through it.”
