Snowboard star Kim breaks ankle

LOS ANGELES, California: US snowboard superstar Chloe Kim said this weekend that she broke her ankle at the Burton US Open and will need surgery.

Kim, who won Olympic halfpipe gold in 2018 and captured her first halfpipe world title in February at the World Championships in Park City, Utah, announced the news on Twitter late Saturday night.

“Unfortunately found out that I broke my ankle today so I will need to get surgery to get it fixed,” she wrote. “So bummed I won’t be able to compete in Mammoth but I will be there to support!!”

Kim, 18, completed all three rounds of the Burton Open halfpipe in Colorado on Saturday, finishing second to Maddie Mastro.Mastro became the first woman to land a double Crippler Indy — a double back flip — to edge Kim by 12-hundredths of a point.

Mastro’s win ended Kim’s run of eight straight victories, which included her Pyeongchang Winter Olympics triumph.Kim did not give a time frame for her return to competition.
