- Born on 22nd February 1950 in Birmingham, England.
- Is the youngest of five children, the third to survive birth.
- Studied nursing and worked as a nurse before leaving to study and pursue acting.
- Worked in regional theatre before making her London stage debut in Educating Rita and starring in its subsequent 1983 film adaptation, earning prominence.
