KARACHI: Syed Shahid Husain, distinguished economist and former senior vice president of the World Bank, passed away on Monday. He was 84.
Born in 1931, Husain died on May 11, 2015 in Washington after an extended illness.
He has studied at the University of Karachi and later graduated from the London School of Economics and did postgraduate study in development economics at Williams College, Massachusetts.
Husain joined the Civil Service of Pakistan in 1956. He began his international career in 1963 and joined the World Bank later becoming the vice president of the bank in 1972. Husain also served the bank as a senior vice president from 1983-95.
Husain, elder brother of award-winning journalist and write Zahid Hussain, also served as an adviser on finance in Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto’s government from 1976-1977.
