Rani wins Outstanding Writer Award at NBC Universal Festival

Kami Sid starrer Rani has been making waves nationally as well as on international platforms ever since its release. The film screened at multiple international film festivals and has also won several accolades in various categories. The most recent addition to the list is the prestigious NBC Universal Short Film Festival in Los Angeles where the film was screened on October 24 and won the Outstanding Writer Award.

The protagonist Kami Sid, who is a transgender artist and activist, and writer-director of the film Hammad Rizvi were present on the occasion to receive the award.

Rani was selected as one of the six finalists out of over 3500 films at the said festival that celebrates diversity in storytelling and explores themes surrounding race relations, women’s rights, gender and sexual identity. Earlier on, the film won the Fox Inclusion Award at Outfest LA while festivals where the film has screened so far include the Newport Beach Film Festival, Rhode Island International Film Festival, Asian American Film Festival and Tasveer South Asian Film Festival.

The film follows the story of a transgender Pakistani woman who decides to take up the responsibility of an abandoned infant. However, this brings a whole lot of challenges for her and the film explores her journey. Aside from Kami Sid, Rani features Maaz Khan and Hina Pathani while it has been produced by Akbar Allana and Sara Siddiqi.
