Greta Gerwig, who picked up tons of nods for her film, Lady Bird, has found her next project and is looking to cast Meryl Streep, Emma Stone, Saoirse Ronan and Timothee Chalamet. Yes, that’s what you call a major casting coup.
Gerwig last directed the 2017 film, Lady Bird featuring Saoirse Ronan and Timothee Chalamet, which picked up five Oscar nominations including one for Gerwig in director’s category. The director has now settled on her next project, Little Women. As Variety noted in an exclusive report, “The novel by Louisa May Alcott, which follows the March sisters in post-Civil War America, has been adapted several times into feature films, with the 1994 version starring Winona Ryder being the most popular. The BBC’s Little Women miniseries aired late last year.”
Despite past adaptations, Gerwig is eyeing Little Women as her next and the studios are wooing her with actors Meryl Streep, Emma Stone, Saoirse Ronan and Timothee Chalamet “in talks to star” in the film.
Who will land exactly what role remains a mystery at this time. “The roles are unknown at this time as some castings are still being worked out,” reported Variety.
The timing also works out well for the actors who have or are finishing their other projects. Meryl Streep is almost done with shooting for Big Little Lies as well as Mary Poppins. Saoirse Ronan has finished shooting for Mary Queen of Scots, while Timothee Chalamet has started production on The King, his project with Netflix. As for Emma Stone, casting calls opposite her presumed character in Little Women will be taken later this July.
