There is something special yet complex about a father-son relationship. While moms are a symbol for love and care, dads are notorious for being silly and fun. The boys need someone to have burping contests with and to show them the lighter side of a male life. At the same time, they also need someone to greatly shape the man they will become in the future. It’s true that you don’t always have to agree with your dad, but his support is something you cherish. This Father’s Day, You! highlights some of the famous father-son duos that have been a source of inspiration for most of us...

Anwar & Bilal Maqsood

Anwar Maqsood is a creative individual of high merit, who needs no introduction. While he is a scriptwriter, television host, satirist, humorist, and an infrequent actor, he also has incredible artistic abilities that are not quite commonly known by the public. He is truly a gem of a talent and it comes as no surprise that Bilal Maqsood has followed in his footsteps. Bilal is one half of the popular band ‘Strings’ that is not only popular in Pakistan, but has gained fame internationally. Anwar Maqsood reveals in an interview that he has a diverse collection of music - from Beach Boys to Roshan Ara Begum - which inspired Bilal to make music. “All his songs are written by me so you know how much I support him. He had decided to pursue music at a very early age. I told him it is my responsibility to educate him so he should first get a proper degree and then do what he likes.” Like any father, Anwar brims with pride while talking about all that his son has achieved especially his recent work in Coke studio, “Officials from Google recently came to meet the Coke Studio team. They were surprised how a show originating from a country where YouTube was blocked at that time went so viral that it has 72 million downloads and is watched in 120 countries,” he further adds to Bilal’s accolades.

Rahat & Ali Kazmi

Kazmi was born to the iconic ‘Dhoop Kinaray’ couple, Rahat and Sahira Kazmi, in Karachi. He began his career as a child actor in 1995 TV series ‘Zikr Hai Kai Saal Ka’ on PTV Home and then continued playing supporting or minor roles on television. After completing his studies from Karachi, he moved to Canada and began acting and modelling there and in the US by appearing in TV series, commercials and plays. “The kind of pride my parents felt when I made a name for myself here in Canada and America, I think that was really something for them. After ‘Beeba Boys’, my father called me up (usually my mother calls) after the premiere happened, and said that something very strange happened to him. He teaches in National Academy of Performing Arts, and was coming out when this group of girls and guys came up to him and said, ‘You are Ali Kazmi’s father right?’ He said that it was extraordinary. He said that he had never faced that before, and didn’t know what I was going to do with my life, but was proud of me. That really brought a tear to my eye. It was a huge deal for me. I have always idolised my father, he was my hero intellectually, physically and mentally,” reminisced Kazmi in one of his interviews. This is probably what every son wants to hear his father say, Ali Kazmi is truly lucky.

Asif & Ahad Raza Mir

Veteran actor, Asif Raza Mir, has been a popular name in Pakistan television and film industry during the ‘80s. Following in his footsteps, his son, Ahad Raza Mir has become one of the most promising young actors in the industry ever since he rose to fame with ‘Yaqeen ka Safar’; for which Ahad recently won a LSA for his performance. His father beamed with pride as he talked about it in an interview, “It gives me a lot of pride, something I can’t put into words. The best thing about Ahad’s award is that ‘Yaqeen Ka Safar’ was his first play on the Pakistani screens and that in itself would go down in history that there is this one individual to win for his very serial.” This father-son duo is a true embodiment of ‘like father, like son’. They welcome each other’s criticism and use them as suggestions. Ahad shares, “He’s definitely someone who knows me very well and how good I can do, so he’s particularly good at pinpointing what is it exactly that I do right or I don’t. He’s very helpful in that sense. What stays with me is that he taught me to take my time and be patient.”

Will & Jaden Smith

Father and son bonding comes in many forms. Maybe it’s a fishing trip, or playing basketball, but for actors with equally famous sons it can also mean starring in the same movie. Some have waited years to find the right film to do together like Kirk and Michael Douglas. Then there’s Ben and Jerry Stiller who have been on screen together four times.

The famous father-son duo of Will and Jaden Smith needs no introduction. The two share an amazing bond in real life as well as in reel life. Jaden Smith starred alongside his famous dad in 2006’s ‘The Pursuit of Happyness’. Later on, the duo was seen in a 2013 flick ‘After Earth’. “I started talking about some ideas and ‘After Earth’ was the first thing that Jaden really vibed [with] the ideas,” said Will Smith.

Arnold & Patrick Schwarzenegger

Not all Hollywood fathers are close to their children like Schwarzenegger, but despite their differences, the bond he shares with his son is special. Like many of us, young Patrick was obsessed with his father’s movie to the point where he didn’t mind staying at movie sets for days. “It (movies) created a big bond with my father. He’d take me to the set every morning. I’d sleep in his trailer; accompany him to the makeup set. I grew up with it and into it. Dad put me in a movie when I was a kid. It was my first experience. He got me a little role with Adam Sandler in ‘The Benchwarmers’,” shares Patrick. However, as much as Arnold wanted to help him with his passion, Patrick decided to carve his own path. “He never said ‘Can you get me a meeting?’ or ‘Can you help me with this or that?’ Which is unbelievable, because I said, ‘Any help you need, you just let me know.’ But he was very into doing it on his own,” Arnold enthuses with pride to LA Times. While Patrick is determined to make it on his own, he hopes one day to do a project with his dad, “He’s very supportive. This moment I’m deliberately veering away from my dad. Not trying for any of his movies. Hopefully one day I can be with him, but for now I’m doing what’s called working your butt off.”

David & Brooklyn Beckham

Brooklyn Joseph Beckham is the eldest son of David and Victoria Beckham. They both have millions of fans worldwide, but it is the bond between both Brooklyn and David that makes us go Aww. We can all agree that David Beckham is one of the sexiest men alive, but, it is the fact that he’s one of the most passionate dads we know that puts him in a whole new league of his own. He was one of the world’s best footballers but is open to his son’s choice of ambition. Brooklyn Beckham is aiming to use his photography skills, rather than a football, to reach the top. David and Brooklyn Beckham certainly have a tight father-son bond. The soccer star has often taken to social media to post tributes to his teenage son. And Brooklyn also enjoys showing off his love for his dad on Instagram - together, they are total family goals.
