G for gun control

May 22, 2018

The tragic death of Sabika Sheikh, a Pakistani student who was studying in the US on an exchange programme, has saddened the nation. For many, the US is perceived as a safe country. However, this is far from the truth. Since the beginning of 2018, more than 15 school shooting incidents have been reported, with the Parkland shooting having the largest number of victims – 17.

This incident gave rise to a student-led movement that demanded stricter gun laws in the US. However, these voices of sanity have fallen on deaf ears. The recent incident that took place in Texas also shows the flawed security system of US education institutions where a 17-year-old can easily carry a revolver on premises without getting noticed. It os time the Trump administration took effective action to address the growing problem of violence in school.

Our heartfelt sympathies are with all the families who lost their loved ones in the brutal firing incident at a school in Houston. Our deepest condolences go to parents of Sabika Sheikh. This incident reminded us of the gruesome APS incident where more than 100 children were killed by terrorists.

The wave of terrorism has swiftly reached the US, which is believed to be a safest country. The US administration must take a series of steps to stop gun violence
