- Born on 18th May 1970 in Pennsylvania, U.S.
- Has an older brother, Peter.
- Was slashed in the face by a stranger when she was a child, which left a scar on her left cheek and chin.
- Graduated from University of Virginia with a Bachelor of Arts degree in drama in 1992.
- Started performing with The Second City, which led to a chance to submit scripts to Saturday Night Live. Joined SNL (1997 - 2006) as a writer, and ultimately became the show’s first female head writer.
- Went on to create the acclaimed sitcom 30 Rock (2006 - 2013) as well as the comedy series Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt (2015 - present).
- Has also starred in films including Baby Mama (2008), Date Night (2010), Muppets Most Wanted (2014), Sisters (2015), and Whiskey Tango Foxtrot (2016).
- Published her autobiography,Bossypants, in 2011.
