In Pakistan, the concept of holistic learning has been taking its roots in most of the schooling systems and programmes. Holistic education includes building up of a child’s physical and cognitive skills apart from studying text books only. It also refers to children’s personal growth in terms of their interests and general inclination in order to make learning interesting and more fun.
Keeping this in mind, The Citizens Foundation (TCF)’s programme called ‘Obhartay Sitaray’ - an inter-school singing competition - is organised every year to provide students a platform to prove their passion for singing and to raise funds for education of the less privileged children of TCF. Recently, the finale of the singing competition was held at a local hotel in Karachi, where young participants presented their brimming passion for music and singing. The Chief Guest of the event was the US Consul General, Ms. Grace W. Shelton, who graced the event with her presence along with team TCF.
In order to highlight the aim of the program, the Chairman and Co-Founder of the foundation, Mr. Ateed Riaz said, “The organisation remains committed to the cause of education. We believe that education has to be more holistic than just textbook studies. ‘Obhartay Sitaray’ brings TCF children and private school children on the same platform and I think that is a true reflection of our mission of removing the barriers of class and privilege. It is heartening to see more supporters for this competition each year; our team marks the victory of education over illiteracy and deprivation. I am delighted to see such young students perform difficult Pakistani songs with great poise. You see these bright children of private schools sharing stage with the organisation’s children and you cannot help but see a brilliant future of our country.”
The singing competition, initiated in 2012, has now become a signature event of the organisation. It is managed by a ladies volunteer group called Supporters of The Citizens Foundation (STCF). The group actively puts in time, effort, expertise and resources to arrange a vast array of fundraising events to support the cause of an educated and enlightened Pakistan.
