National Mass Speed Skating Marathon was held recently at Laoniu Bay in China’s Shanxi province. The event took place on a frozen part of the Yellow River.

More than 300 competitors including amateurs and professional skaters, took part in the one day event. Temperatures have varied from 20 degrees below freezing point.

The temperatures are ideal in keeping the lake frozen. The ice is way thicker than the standard ice thickness.

Du Yuqin, is a 60 year old participant from Herbei province who felt happy to take part in the race and expected to perform well.

Another former skating athlete took part in all the games with her team and was appreciative of the natural view of the Laoniu Bay.

The location of Laoniu Bay is ideal for winter sports due to its location and freezing temperatures. It lies between the intersection of the Yellow River and the Great Wall of China.

China will also play host to 2022 Winter Olympics and aims to encourage more Chinese to take part in winter games.
