The ceremony that includes a comprehensive orientation workshop of the faculty of RMU was organised to familiarise the supervisors, mentors and trainees with the implementation of curriculum, monitoring and evaluation of PhD, MD, MS and M.Phil programmes.

Vice Chancellor of RMU Professor Dr. Muhammad Umar hosted the event along with Member Syndicate and Co-Chairman of Board of Advanced Studies & Research at Rawalpindi Medical University Professor Fareed A. Minhas.

Speaking on the occasion, Professor Umar gave a programme overview to the faculty of the RMU while Chairman Institutional Postgraduate Medical Education Committee Professor Muhammad Ajmal gave a detailed introduction of RMU residency programmes along with explaining infrastructure of the RMU residency for the participants.

He also explained pre-requisites for a professional to be a resident in RMU and delivered a detailed lecture about responsibilities of RMU faculty and trainees.

Dean of Paediatrics Professor Dr. Rai Muhammad Asghar spoke on the postgraduate training of RMU involving the competencies including patient care and procedural skills, practice based learning and improvement, medical knowledge, professionalism, interpersonal and communication skills and system based practice to alleviate the human suffering caused by disease.

Co-Chairman BASR Professor Minhas delivered a detailed presentation on research in RMU and workshops planned for the trainees in PhD, MD, MS and M.Phil programmes.

Speaking on the occasion, he said that he had a feeling that many candidates would be drawn to biological or lab research, including heavily clinical and laboratory studies. The 'tertiary hospital' environment will also make many students choose this focus. The expertise for supervision of these studies will need to be developed. Concurrently, students should be encouraged to involve themselves in secondary, primary and public health care, and understand and do research on these systems. This lends well to the idea of the community health model that has already been conceived, he said. Perhaps we can develop a broad research strategy, with domains, areas and projects aligned with Pakistan health Vision 2020, so students are encouraged to conduct projects, said Professor Minhas.
