The year 2017 has ended but not before creating a record of sorts. If figures are to be believed, the worldwide box office collected 39.92 billion dollars in 2017, which makes it the highest-grossing year in global box office history.

According to ComScore figures, though domestic box office in the USA closed with 11.12 billion dollars, which is lower than 2016, the gap was closed by figures collected in the international waters.

Despite perception, the highest grossing films of the year actually include Disney’s Beauty And The Beast ($1.264B); Universal’s Fate Of The Furious ($1.236B); Disney’s Star Wars: The Last Jedi ($1.04B); Universal/Illumination’s Despicable Me 3 at $1.033B and Sony’s Spider-Man: Homecoming at $880.2M.

Other big box office hits include Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol 2 ($864M); Thor: Ragnarok ($848M); Wonder Woman ($822M) and Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales ($795M). Films that did exceedingly well include Fox’s Logan; Disney’s still-lively Coco; and WB’s Kong: Skull Island and Dunkirk.

“Going to the movies is truly a worldwide phenomenon,” Paul Dergarabedian, ComScore’s Senior Media Analyst is quoted telling Deadline. “The ‘big screen’ experience was bolstered by a unique and compelling slate of titles in 2017 that sparked an exceptional level of enthusiasm by patrons who flocked to movie theatres around the globe.”
