The year 2017 has flown by so fast and feels like it was January just a few days ago right? Well, now that we have entered the New Year, it is time to glamorise our looks. And for that we need to know what’s
hot and what’s not. Keeping this in mind You! talks to three stylists/beauticians who reveal what is going to be in vogue in 2018. All set to stand out and look beautiful? Read on to find out more...
Makeup trends by Mona J
This year, Mona predicts that the base/foundation will be more dewy and glowy than the last year. The foundation will be more natural and have a water shine in 2018. Also, heavy contouring has been replaced by light foundation and highlighters.
Want a flawless base? For that, Mona suggests to prepare your skin and use products that suit your skin type. The pre-makeup steps include using a face wash and cleaning your face with a cleanser. It is important to normalise the skin and for that make sure to use a toner if you want to get a glow on your face. Then apply a primer that has illuminisers or pearl agents in it.
“You can go for ‘Makeup Forever’ illuminiser in light pink hue. This will give a very natural and rosy shine. The next step is to apply high definition liquid base (MAC, Sephora or Makeup Forever) mixed with 2 to 3 drops of clear gloss. Mix together the two and dot it all over your face. Blend it well. If you feel that your dark circles are still prominent then apply a concealer. And end it off by applying a high definition transparent powder under the eyes, sides of your nose and around the lips. Make sure that you don’t go overboard by opting for oily foundations and applying lots of shimmery products.”
We saw a lot of glitter in 2017, but the New Year is all about soft and subtle makeup with natural shimmer and glow. Moreover, brown smokey makeup with a touch of gold in the inner corners of the eyes will be quite popular. Thick brows and unmade, brushed out eyebrows are very much in. The bold and bright lip colours will take a backseat and hues like light and purplish brown, peach and light pink will be all the rage in 2018. Both matte and glossy rouges will be in fashion.
As far as hair is concerned, hair dyes that are in vogue will be pink, aqua blue, rose gold, yellow, light violet and baby blue. In short, colourful hair is very in nowadays and will make its way through 2018. As far as hair cuts are concerned, it would be short and more geometrical. Squares and razor cuts are trending these days.
In terms of hair dyeing techniques, Ecaille and Colour Melt techniques are quite popular these days. Ecaille is basically hair colour with highlights but it gives a very soft and blended effect.
And Colour Melt is all about dark roots that seamlessly end in a lighter shade.

“If we talk about makeup, finished makeup such as 3D foundation will be in. For the eyes fun pastel shades like blue, green and lilac will be the ‘it’ thing. And for lips soft pinks, nude peach and coffee - in short more natural tones will reign 2018. In terms of hair, lots of layers and messy textured hair will be in fashion. In my opinion, the hottest hair colours of 2018 include cherry and lilac hues.”
Coming to clothes, hues such as navy blue, purple, soft pinks and greys will be trending. The cuts will be minimal and simpler. Girls who are more into eastern wear, go for less prints and more colour blocking. And those who prefer western wear, I would advise girls to avoid wearing bling heels with casual jeans and keep it fun by doing their hair in a rough top knot. Keep your makeup minimal and as natural as possible. Moreover, jewellery can do wonders in accessorising your overall look. If you are opting for a subtle makeup, add heavy and blingy earrings. Don’t wear every piece of jewellery. Keep it less. Go for statement pieces for a sophisticated look.
When it comes to shoes and bags, Raana is of the view that they can make all the difference and complement even the simplest of outfits. You can go for contrasts like bright green, deep purple or yellow. This year different kinds of heel shapes will be in fashion.
Tress talk by Humaa Tahir
“A good hair cut, colour or style can jazz up one’s persona. But sadly, our women are afraid to experiment. Celebs especially models are opting for bobs and pixie cuts but besides that, no one is daring enough to sport trends that are popular, internationally. Women over here just don’t want to change their appearance and prefer having long or medium length hair. So, just like previous years, long lengths and layers will be all the rage in 2018 as well. As far as hair colour is concerned, Pakistani women will only opt for chocolate brown, caramel, copper blonde and golden highlights.
“If we talk internationally, then hair will be really short. Shorter than pixie cut - you can say that army-boy hair cut will be much in vogue. Deep violet, greenish ash and bluish ash hair colours are trending these days and will make way in 2018 as well. Moreover, streaks will be in.”
According to Humaa, 2017 was the year of curly hair, but over here everyone is obsessed with straight silky tresses. “Girls if you have curly hair, the only thing you need to do is to tame your curls and frizz. Use sulphate-free shampoos, curl creams and leave in conditioners,” shares Humaa.
