The trailer of Ocean’s 8, the all-star, all-women heist thriller, opens exactly the way the first frame of Ocean’s Eleven began. In that venture, we saw George Clooney’s Danny Ocean talking to the parole board about mending his ways in a bid to win his freedom.

In this one, it’s his sister Debbie Ocean, played by Sandra Bullock, talking to the parole board about mending her ways and wanting a simple life.

While the Ocean’s film franchise ultimately spanned three hugely successful films, millions of dollars on the box office and the bromance of George Clooney and Brad Pitt, who led the cast from the front, here it’s seven women who form the heist crew. Cate Blanchett is to Bullock what Brad Pitt was to George Clooney within the Ocean’s universe.

The all-star film sees Bullock and Blanchett assemble a badass crew that features Mindy Kaling as a jewelry expert, Awkwafina as a pickpocket, Sarah Paulson as reluctant mom who eventually participates in the heist and Rihanna as Nine Ball (Rihanna). They are joined by Helena Bonham Carter as the other accomplice and Anne Hathaway as a celebrity they intend to rob.

Unlike Ocean’s boy series, the target is neither a casino (or three) in Las Vegas nor European in nature but the annual Met Gala that takes place in New York. Due out in the Summer, this is easily one sequel/prequel/spin-off we can get behind.

Steven Soderberg, who directed the Ocean’s film is the executive producer of the film as is George Clooney. It is rumoured that at least one member from the past films will make an appearance in the upcoming film. The cast is diverse and share great chemistry, which is always a plus. The film is also making a statement about money and what incarceration does to your prospects. It’s also about economic freedom and what it means for women.

The fate of the film, however, will be determined by box office earnings but given the trailer, there is good chance that it will shine come June 11, 2018.
