The Punjab CM has reportedly ordered the process of revival of the executive magistracy system to be expedited. This system was abolished during the Musharraf regime.
The executive magistracy was the greatest weapon in the hands of our colonial masters to keep their subjects constantly intimidated and under control. Our dictators also used this system to crush their opponents. The CM has been advocating the revival of executive magistracy on the pretext of maintaining law and order and price control. But this is a fallacy. The current wave of terrorism has both internal and external dimensions while price control falls under the dynamics of supply and demand. Therefore, the restoration of the executive magistracy, if taken, will be an utterly undemocratic step.
