- Has three brothers - William (who died in a swimming accident in 1988), Andrew, and John.
- Parents divorced when she was a child.
- Studied at Wellesley College and then Harvard University, but dropped out one semester short of earning her degree to pursue her acting career.
- Started acting in television commercials before gaining some recognition after appearing in the film The Karate Kid (1984) and starring in the television series Call to Glory (1984 -1985).
- Went Has gone on to appear in films including Link (1986), Adventures in Babysitting (1987), Cocktail (1988), Back to the Future Part II (1989), Back to the Future Part III (1990), Soapdish (1991), Leaving Las Vegas (1995), The Saint (1997), Hollow Man (2000), and most recently Battle of the Sexes (2017), as well as the TV series CSI: Crime Scene Investigation (2012 - 2015).
