Batman fans simply cannot get enough of the Joker, Batman’s arch nemesis and that’s why we keep seeing the villain again and again on the big screen. Jack Nicholson, the late Heath Ledger and Jared Leto have all had the chance to play the iconic villain in Batman, The Dark Knight and Suicide Squad respectively.

But perhaps fans aren’t too happy with this latest update. A standalone Joker film is in the pipeline and HangoverdirectorTodd Phillips was tapped to co-write and possibly helmthe Joker film that may give themaniacal villain a backstory, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Also, Martin Scorsese will be producing the film. Sources say the story will take place in the 1980s and have more of the look of a gritty crime drama than comic book movie, which had a lot to do with getting Scorsese’s commitment to the project. It has also been confirmed that Jared Leto will not be returning as Joker in this upcoming film.

Fans are already furious at the idea of Joker getting a back-story and Twitter was set ablaze with fans hating on the idea. “There’s plenty of arguments for how a Joker movie could work, but in the end it humanizes him and that’s not a Joker I want to be honest,” wrote one Twitter user.
