Since natural disasters like floods can wreak havoc in the country at any point in time, the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) Punjab’s decision to set up 3C (the Command and Control Centre) is a commendable step that will lead us in the right direction. These control rooms have been established at the district level as well to cope with any untoward situation. The main reason for setting up the control room is to create liaison between different departments in the wake of possible floods. The staff working in the control room is also in close contact with the meteorological and irrigation department to obtain the latest information regarding weather situation. In addition, the Cabinet Committee on Floods also carries out a weekly review of the pre-flood arrangements. So far, at least 13 meetings of the cabinet committee on floods have been conducted to ensure preparedness in the wake of possible floods during the monsoon season this year.

An analysis of the country’s history highlighted the fact that no other natural disaster in Pakistan has caused more destruction and devastation than the flash floods witnessed during the period between 2010 and 2013. We have finally learnt from our past mistakes and set up a team that is alert and vigilant to ensure that any untoward situation is averted.
