This refers to the article, ‘On electric cars and war clouds’ (May 31), by Atta-ur-Rahman. Across the world, the auto industry is undergoing a major change. According to experts, by 2025, countries like the US, Japan, China, the UK, will disband the production of fossil-based vehicles. The competition at present is to produce even more powerful batteries which can take electric vehicles to long distances on a single charge.
Advantages of electric cars are that these cars would cut down the maintenance cost and curb pollution to a great extent. This innovation will affect the OPEC countries since the price of oil in the international market would fall at below $25 per barrel. Electric cars are not being sold at exorbitant prices. The price of electric cars is also reducing at a fast pace and it is expected that by 2022, a single unit of an electric car would cost around $20,000 – at present, in the US, these cars are sold at more than $35,000.
