Last year, the heatwave resulted in the death of over 1,000 people. The Met department has already warned that the city is most likely to hit by a heatwave. This month, the city’s temperature is likely to soar to 40 degrees Celsius. It is the responsibility of the provincial government to work out a plan to ensure the safety of citizens. Since Ramazan has started, many people will be fasting – therefore easily prone to dehydration.

The electricity crisis and the water shortage have created a lot of trouble for people of Karachi. These issues must be resolved on a priority basis. The local government should start a campaign to plant trees to minimise the radiation of heat. It is time the government took measures to protect citizens from heatstroke.
