HYDERABAD: Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu is in the news for all the wrong reasons. The astute politician that he is considered to be, Naidu put his foot in his mouth when he adviced people to produce more children in the interest of the future.
The timing of Naidu’s remark couldn’t have been worse, coming as it does in the backdrop of the furore over Hindutva proponents calling upon women to produce more children, even if the chief minister’s reasoning is different.
Naidu’s reforms-savvy and pro-development image went for a toss with this singular piece of advice, as shocked opposition parties and population experts took him to task.
“These days, youngsters are not marrying early. Even if they do, they do not have children as they don’t want responsibilities early.
If this trend continues, we may become like Japan where there are more old people than the young.
