The eight film of the popular Fast and the Furious franchise has just witnessed the biggest box office opening ever. The Fate of the Furious has so far collected a record $US532.5 million ($701.5 million) at the box office. The film has managed to beat films like Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Jurassic World with its box office collections.
“There is no market that hasn’t had a strong reception,” said Duncan Clark, Universal’s president of international distribution. “Whatever culture, whatever language, whatever country, we seem to have found a home.”
According to CNN, Fate also broke box office records for bringing in the biggest international opening in movie history. The film made $433.2 million overseas, surpassing the record $316.7 million that Jurassic World made abroad in its first weekend in 2015. Domestically, Fate made $98.8 million over the weekend.
“This is an astonishing feat for a decade and a half old franchise that launched as a marginalized car culture movie with no stars and no imaginings of a long-term franchise future,” said Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst at comScore (SCOR).
Universal has also announced a ninth and tenth installment for 2019 and 2021.
