This refers to the article, ‘The worst electoral system’ (January 4) by Asif Ezdi. The writer has highlighted why the first-past-the-post system is not the best one to have and argued that “...scrapping FPTP must be the first order of business in any genuine electoral reform”. Another change urgently required is the creation of more provinces. Punjab should be divided into five or six provinces with the former state of Bahawalpur being accorded the status of a separate province.
At the time of partition, Quaid-e-Azam had promised that Bahawalpur would remain a separate province in case it acceded to Pakistan. It is time we kept the promise of Quaid-e-Azam. The division of Punjab will be more a balancing act as currently Sindh, KP and Balochistan feel that Punjab is dominating the federation. But do we have leaders willing to take these steps in the interest of the country?
