For many people, the chilly days of winter bring more than just a rosy glow to the cheeks. However, they also bring uncomfortable dryness to the skin, face, hands, and feet. Want to know ways to get rid of dry skin and give your winter skin care regimen a boost? Read on, and find out how you can keep your skin supple and healthy throughout the winters...

Moisturize more

You may have found a moisturizer that works just fine in spring and summer. But as weather conditions change, so, should your skin care routine as well. Find a moisturizer that is oil-based, rather than water-based, as the oil will create a protective layer on the skin that retains more moisture than a cream or lotion. But choose your oils with care because not all oils are appropriate for the face. Instead, look for ‘non-clogging’ oils, like primrose oil, or almond oil.

Take care of your hands & feet

Your hands and feet have fewer oil glands. That means it is harder to keep them moist, especially in cold, dry weather. This can lead to itchiness and cracking. To keep the skin soft and comfortable, massage them with hand and feet creams in the morning and evening, as well as every time you wash your hands/feet. If you are worried about having greasy hands or feet, there are non-greasy creams available in the market. If it is extremely cold then make sure to wear gloves when you go outside and don’t forget socks to keep your feet warm.

Give your lips extra attention

Apply a moisturizing lip balm when you are doing the rest of your skin care, make it part of your routine. Make sure you apply some Vaseline/petroleum jelly to your lips before you go out as this creates a protective barrier between the cold air and your lips, locking in moisture. Remember that petroleum jelly isn’t actually moisturizing, it’s only protective, so use another lip balm alongside it.

Slather on the sunscreen

No, sunscreen is not just for summertime. Winter sun can still damage your skin. Try applying a broad-spectrum sunscreen to your face and your hands (if they’re exposed) about 30 minutes before going outside. Reapply frequently if you stay outside a long time.

DIY:

Now you don’t need to spend a lot of money on buying expensive skin care products. All you have to do is just look for items in your kitchen...

Honey & raw milk

The mixture of honey and raw milk offers a lot of skin care benefits. The anti-inflammatory properties of milk help you treat the dry and itchy skin while the presence of lactic acid makes it a perfect way to restore the skin moisture. On the other hand, honey is loaded with numerous antioxidants, vitamins and minerals that are essential to maintain the skin’s health.

How to make it?

Oatmeal mask

The oatmeal mask is an effective treatment for dry and flaky skin. The mask contains raw egg yolk, honey, and oatmeal flakes.

Preparing the mask:

Olive oil

Olive oil contains many antioxidants and healthy fatty acids that are good for your skin. It can soothe and condition dry skin all over your body. So make sure you dab a thin layer of extra virgin olive oil under your regular moisturizer. Also, about a half an hour before taking a shower, rub some olive oil on your hands, legs and other areas with dry skin and massage lightly. Take a shower and then apply a light moisturizer.

Here’s what to do!

Yoghurt

Yoghurt is an excellent skin-hydrating agent. Plus, its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties help soothe dry and itchy skin. It also contains lactic acid that helps getting rid of any germs or bacteria that may cause dryness or itchiness. You can apply fresh yoghurt on your hands, face and legs and gently massage it into your skin. Leave it on for 10 minutes and then take a shower. The mild exfoliating action of yogurt will remove dry skin and leave your skin refreshed. Do this once daily.
