Hi Editor,

The cover story Reinventing the ‘temple of learning’ by S.Z was an awesome read. The library really sounds like a paradise: the calm ambience, a treasure of books, digitalised cataloguing and a cosy cafe. In fact, the description of the library is interesting and vivid enough to trigger my imagination. I can see myself slouched on a chair with The Bell Jar (the book I am currently reading) and sipping some hot coffee while I read Sylvia Plath’s depressing book.

Unfortunately, I live quite far from the British Council library; I wish we had dozens of such libraries in Karachi. I have a state library near my home where I go everyday and spend almost an hour reading newspapers. The books give off a musty smell and the library building is dilapidated, but I still love it.

Hi Ed,

Reading Ruling Social Media by Zunaira Afzal was fun. I always enjoy reading about girls making it big, and I feel a deep respect for Faiza because she left a career in Law to follow her passion and succeeded. Not many girls – or even guys – have the courage to do so. Wish you a great future, Faiza! You are certainly an inspiration.

Hey Editor,

It was nice to see a tribute to one of the best Pakistanis, ever. I, of course, speak of Edhi Sahab whose devotion to serving humanity without any prejudice should be an example for us all. By remembering him, we can keep his legacy alive, and perhaps inspire our young people to follow him as their role model. Well done, Javeria Shakil-Kazim.

Dear Eddy,

This week’s edition (November 4) was really interesting. However, I feel jealous of people in Karachi and Lahore who can enjoy the British Council Library. Let me tell you about the library I am a member of; you cannot take your own books, and they hardly have any good reference books. Also, it’s so hot in summer that when all members are present it becomes positively stinky. Yes, it’s not air conditioned, but even the fans don’t work because of constant power outages. It’s impossible to study at home at times because we are a big family. I feel compelled to study there, especially during exam time. So please stop tantalizing us lesser mortals who don’t live in big cities. I won’t mention the name of my city here, because I love it!

Swift Taylor

Dear Ed,

Who knew Taylor Swift would become the highest-paid woman in music at the age of 26? Yes, Swift pulled in 170 million dollars over the past year. It is strange that one of her most boring songs Wildest Dream became a super hit. Actually, many music followers are shocked; with only a single album in the past two years and few performances, she managed to earn so much and leave behind Adele who has been working really hard. I think Swift’s strength is in her fans. When she has fans in Pakistan, you can think of her fan base in the West.

I have a request: it would be super great if you could have some analytical/critical articles on western and Pakistani musicians. Like, we recently had Coke Studio season 9 so you could have published something on it.

Reflection

Narrated by Abu Huraira:

Allah’s Apostle (S.A.W) said, ‘There are three persons whom Allah will not look at on the Day of Resurrection, nor will he purify them and there shall be a severe punishment. They are: 1. The man who possessed superfluous water, on a way and he withheld it from travellers. 2. The man who gave a pledge of allegiance to a ruler and he gave it only for worldly benefits. 3. And the man who displayed his goods for sale after the ‘Asr prayer and he said, ‘By Allah, except Whom none has the right to be worshipped, I have been given so much for my goods,’ and somebody believes him (and buys them).’ The Prophet then recited: ‘Verily! Those who purchase a little gain at the cost of Allah’s Covenant and their oaths.’
