The shutdown of both the runways of the Lahore Airport meant that the thousands of passengers stranded at the Lahore airport for days because of fog had to undergo more misery even if visibility had improved. Fog is a regular seasonal feature in Punjab and the only remedy lies in installing the ILS Category 3 system on runways which aid aircraft equipped with the required instrumentation to land in poor or low visibility.
The CAA is required to install this latest technology and systems to facilitate smooth flight operations without compromising the safety standards set by the ICAO. But its vast revenues are its biggest handicap. Because of this, the authority attracts corrupt officials and political cronies to key positions for which they have never been trained, nor do they have the required exposure to commercial aviation.
