This refers to the editorial, ‘Tragedy at Gadani’ (Nov 3). Accidents in industries like the Gadani shipyard cylinder explosion and the Baldia Town factory fire, among others, is because of the violation of labour laws and insufficient safety measures. Billions are spent on the construction of buildings, installation of machinery, and purchase of raw material. However, a nominal amount is spent towards workers’ safety at work. It is the responsibility of such industrial sites to have a detailed job safety analysis in order to adopt relevant control measures.

The concerned authorities should review and revise the labour laws of the country. They must ensure that ‘safety comes first’. Concerned departments must take action for the prevention of such disasters and the government must provide them with necessary resources, training and procedures to deal with such emergencies.
