- Is the daughter of actress Debbie Reynolds and singer Eddie Fisher (who left her mother for Elizabeth Taylor).
- Has a younger brother, Todd.
- Developed an interest in books as a child and read a lot.
- Started acting in her teens, making her film debut in Shampoo (1975) before shooting to fame for playing the role of Princess Leia in Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope (1977) and its sequels The Empire Strikes Back (1980) and Return of the Jedi (1983).
- Subsequently appeared in movies including The Blues Brothers (1980), Hannah and Her Sisters (1986), The Burbs (1989), and When Harry Met Sally... (1989).
- Published her first novel, the semi-autobiographical Postcards from the Edge, in 1987. Has since written several more books. Her next, The Princess Diarist, will be out later this year.
- Has reprised the role of Princess Leia in the Star Wars revival trilogy. Will next be seen in Star Wars: Episode VIII (2017).
